Namecoin is the first-ever blockchain to fork off of Bitcoin and thus becoming the first true “Altcoin” to hit the market, initially releasing on April 17th, 2011. It is a Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency that has a “Merged Mining” protocol with the bitcoin blockchain. Originally proposed as BitDNS in 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto, Hal Finney, and many other early pioneers joined discussion on a BitcoinTalk forum to support the idea of a “decentralized domain name system”. In June of 2013 NameID was launched and allowed associate profile information with identities on the Namecoin blockchain, and an OpenID provider to allow logging into existing websites with Namecoin identities. Thus creating the first “NFTs” to exist on a blockchain.
