What Are Runes?

Runes is a fungible token standard on Bitcoin, launched on April 19, 2024, by Casey Rodarmor -- the same creator behind Bitcoin Ordinals. Runes represents an improvement of the BRC-20 standard created by Domo in March 2023, offering a more efficient and streamlined approach to creating fungible tokens directly on the Bitcoin blockchain.

The First 10,000

This directory catalogs notable entries from the first 10,000 Bitcoin Runes. Each Rune is identified by its numeric ID, ticker symbol, and associated creator.

Notable Runes

Special Collections

Rare Pups Collection (IDs 933-1490) Seven 1/1 Runes created as part of the Rare Pups project, scattered throughout the early Rune ID range.

Crypto Poem (IDs 2868-3027) A twelve-verse poem permanently preserved on the Bitcoin blockchain through Runes. Each verse is a separate Rune, creating a literary work embedded in Bitcoin's ledger.

Rune Bricks (IDs 4021-5366) Ten 1/1 Runes forming a collection of digital bricks -- an artistic experiment in scarcity and Bitcoin-native collectibles.

Void Cenotaph (IDs 5570-6235) A collection with a supply of 666 tokens, representing approximately 6% of the first 10,000 Runes. The name references a cenotaph -- an empty tomb -- adding a layer of conceptual depth to the collection.

The Significance

The first 10,000 Runes represent a historic moment in Bitcoin's evolution. Much like low-number Ordinals inscriptions, these early Runes carry provenance value simply by existing at the protocol's genesis.

The diversity of the first 10K -- from individual creators to coordinated collections, from memes to poetry -- reflects the creative energy that Bitcoin's programmability continues to unlock.

This directory serves as a historical record of what the community chose to etch into Bitcoin's ledger when given the chance to be first.
